Stages of the Criminal Process

The criminal process consists of the investigation stage, which begins with a suspicion of crime, and the prosecution stage, which begins once the indictment is accepted. A suspect may object to investigation measures in person or through counsel. If the prosecutor concludes that an offence has been committed, an indictment is issued and a criminal case is opened. The defendant has the right to the assistance of a lawyer at every stage of the trial.
